The Antiquity of Sree Vayaloorappan

Stretching back to primordial times, the spiritual presence at Vayaloor is intertwined with the ancient traditions of the Sangam period.

Rooted in Primordial Time

The spiritual presence at Vayaloor stretches back to what ancient texts call Aadi — the very beginning — also referred to as the Kaatalam, the ancient forest era. The worship here is deeply intertwined with the ancient spiritual traditions of the Sangam period.

Seyyon · Sree Kiratha Sastha

In ancient Sangam literature, the presiding deity of the mountainous landscape is Seyyon. At Vayaloor, this fierce, protective, and radiant energy manifests as Sree Kiratha Sastha — the divine hunter and guardian of the forests.

Known as Murugan in broader tradition and Seyyon in Sangam poetry, the deity of the hills is described as radiant, bearing the sacred Vel (spear). At Vayaloor, He assumes the Kiratha (hunter) form of Sastha.

Kottravai · Shankarodathamma

By His side stands the formidable Kottravai, the ancient Goddess of victory, valor, and the wilderness. Here, She is worshipped as Shankarodathamma, the sovereign mother who fiercely protects her children.

Kottravai, the ancient war goddess of the Sangam texts, is deeply connected to the historic Shankarodath Kovilakam — a royal lineage temple house forming part of the sacred heritage of this Kshetram.

The Cosmic Vastu of the Kshetram

In Hindu sacred geography, a temple guarded by peaks in all eight directions (Ashtadik Palas) is considered a supremely energized location. The eight mountains form a natural mandala — a cosmic enclosure that concentrates and amplifies divine energy within.
